What Makes Downtown Burlingame Different from the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce?
People sometimes ask: What’s the difference between “Downtown Burlingame” (previously DBBID)) and the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce?
The short answer is that we’re both here to support local business—just in different (and in highly complementary) ways.
The Downtown Burlingame Business Improvement District is a place-based organization focused on the downtown Burlingame experience.
The Downtown Burlingame Business Improvement District is designed to strengthen the downtown Burlingame district specifically—beautification, promotions, events, and the overall customer experience that helps businesses thrive in our defined downtown area between El Camino Real to California and Chapin to Howard.
Think of Downtown Burlingame (BID) as a “downtown stewardship engine.” We focus on:
Downtown district identity + branding (“Downtown Burlingame” as a destination)
Foot traffic and merchant visibility
Events and promotions that bring people downtown
Beautification, placemaking, and visitor experience
Business community-building inside the district (quarterly merchant-facing mixers, seasonal campaigns such as the annual Wine Walk and FallFest and collaborations with both community and business stakeholders)
In other words, Downtown Burlingame is built around a shared goal—making downtown more vibrant and visible as a place and destination for visitors.
The Burlingame Chamber of Commerce is a business membership organization with broader reach.
The Burlingame Chamber is a member-driven organization that supports businesses through:
Networking and professional connection
Citywide business advocacy and visibility
Recognition and awards
Educational opportunities and partnerships
Regional collaboration with other chambers and institutions
In other words: the Chamber is built around supporting businesses as members, across sectors and often across a broader geography.
Not either/or but definitely Better Together
Downtown Burlingame and the Chamber serve different functions, and when both are strong, Burlingame benefits. The Chamber elevates business leadership, recognition, and regional partnerships. The BID focuses on the downtown district experience—driving discovery, strengthening the brand, and creating reasons for people to spend time downtown.
We already started 2026 with a flair: Two great examples of our distinct roles
Early 2026 was a perfect snapshot of how these missions show up in real life:
The Burlingame Chamber kicked off 2026 with its Annual Luncheon, celebrating community and recognizing achievement. The City of Burlingame presented the Green Business Award recognition to Neli Vilchez of Floral Art & Décor who is also a Board member of the Downtown Burlingame BID. Neli has been instrumental in encouraging businesses in downtown Burlingame to get Green certified—a reminder that downtown merchants are leaders in innovation, sustainability, and service.
The Chamber also demonstrated its regional partnership role by collaborating with the South San Francisco and Daly City/Colma Chambers of Commerce for a Sundown Soirée at Skyline College—bringing together cross-community relationships that strengthen the Peninsula’s business ecosystem.
Meanwhile, Downtown Burlingame welcomed the new year by doing what we do best: building connections right here among the merchants. We hosted our Quarterly Business Mixer at the Vinyl Room, bringing downtown businesses together face-to-face—with delicious hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Mykonos and Capri Lasagneria. It was a warm, energizing start to the year—and a reminder that strong downtowns are built through local collaboration.
Why this distinction matters
When you understand the “why,” it becomes clear:
The Chamber of Commerce helps businesses connect, grow, and be recognized—often citywide and regionally.
The Downtown Burlingame BID helps downtown succeed as a destination—strengthening the environment where businesses operate day to day.
Different toolkits. Same goal: a thriving Burlingame.
